As the children progress from one level to the next, the physical demands will increase. Not only do they learn new skills, they have to do more physical conditioning. It is not uncommon for them to spend hours at a time doing conditioning exercises. Children sometimes get discouraged because they are concentrating less on skills and focusing more on strengthening, which can cause some short-term discomfort. It can be difficult for them to understand that the physical grounding is important in order to move on to more difficult skills. However, learning patience and discipline is an important lesson in life.

Even if they leave gymnastics, children often have developed enough skills that they can excel in almost any sport. The upper and lower body strength gained in gymnastics will help with kicking in soccer and batting in baseball/softball. The coordination, endurance and speed contribute to their ability to perform in swimming and track. The flexibility also allows them to move on to dance and cheerleading. Almost any other sport can be improved by participation in gymnastics. Although boys may be teased for being in gymnastics, which has often been considered a girls’ sport, male gymnasts are among the most physically fit and strongest athletes.

Competitive gymnastics also help children develop confidence in themselves and their bodies. At first, a timid child may display anxieties about performing in public. However, they soon learn to channel those anxieties in a more positive direction as the adrenaline produced carry them through their routines. They begin to develop mental aggressiveness and competitiveness.

If you have an interest in gymnastics as a sport, you must remember that not only does it require a lot in terms of physical demand, but also time commitment. Competitive gymnasts spend anywhere from twelve to thirty hours at the gym, depending on their level of achievement. This is a major time investment, but it has long-term rewards.

    Gymnastics Wear And Competition Leotards

    The usual gymnastics wear for women during competition is the leotard. It is a skin-tight, one-piece garment that covers the upper body but leaves the legs free, made famous by Jules Leotard, a French acrobatic artist.

    By tradition, leotards worn during competitions have long sleeves. Some changes have recently taken place where half-length sleeved and sleeveless versions have been worn by competitors.

    The Code of Points already permits this type of wear to be worn by teams at the World Gymnastics Championships and other major meets. During practice, gymnasts usually wear sleeveless styles.

    Individual gymnasts and teams may be penalized for some faults in the way they wear their competition attire. The correct way of wearing the leotards is that it must neither ride too high nor be out too low on the hip.

    The materials used have also changed over time. Polyester and related fabrics were very typical in the 1970s. Lycra and spandex became popular since the 1980s.

    More sophisticated fabrics have been made since the 1990s. Velvet, velour, mesh, metallic fabrics, foils and sparkling “hologram” fabric have also revolutionized gymnastics wear.

    There are styles that are adorned with rhinestones and metallic jewels. These are set on the fabric using heat so that they do not fall off when washed.

    Gymnasts may wear any hair style and hair length, but should always keep long hair tied back into a ponytail, bun or braid. To make them look tidier, hair ties that match their competition leotards are given to gymnasts.

    Any type of leotard could be worn by gymnasts during trainings and practice. The usual attires worn by women during physical exercises in combination with their sleeveless leotards are leggings, shorts, bicycle shorts or tank tops. However, as part of their gymnastics wear, they must always see to it that their hair is tied.

    Gymnastic routines require the use of mobility, the movement of the gymnast from one level to the next.

    USA Gymnastics (USAG) has established rules of mobility. Each gymnast is placed relative to their fulfillment of the criteria that USAG has established. Gymnastic mobility is based solely on scores achieved in USAG sanctioned competitions.

    It is becoming increasingly obvious that gymnastics is a very technical, perfection-oriented sport. Advancement in the sport depends solely on how well the basics are mastered. Similar to a pyramid, the larger a base of support (basics), the higher the pyramid will stand (ultimate goal level). The following criterion helps decide the placement of each gymnast:

    Physical Preparedness
    An assessment is made of the gymnasts strength, flexibility, endurance, agility, quickness, and suppleness.

    Emotional and Psychological Readiness of the Gymnast
    These attributes are observable in a subjective way, as opposed to an objective manner. They readily indicate the gymnasts ability to overcome reasonable fears, to make quick, yet sound judgments, plus self-motivation, and dedication to achieving their gymnastic goals.

    Present Gymnastics Skill Level
    By asking the gymnast to have acquired the skills needed in the next level routines before being considered to move up, the gymnastics skills and routine readiness for the coming competitive season can be projected.
    By combining all of the above factors, plus day-to-day experiences with that gymnast, the gymnastics coach will determine the most successful level. To be successful at gymnastics competitions a gymnast must train at 100% and be able to compete at 80%.

    USA GYMNASTICS PROGRAM

    Competency Levels

    There are 11 competency levels to the USAG women’s program. Levels 1-3 are non-competitive levels that center on teaching the basic core skills for each of the the four Olympic events. They consist of doing individual skills and small routines while showing proficiency on four main points of each skill. When the gymnast successfully completes each skill and routines required on an event, she may move on to the next level.

    Compulsory Levels

    The first competitive level is Level 4 and it consists entirely of compulsory routines. Compulsory routines are a pre-choreographed series of skills that each competitor must perform. Once again they are made up of core skills needed for each event built on the skills from a previous level. The philosophy of these routines is for the athletes to practice toward perfection of these basics. The minimum age for this level is six and there is no maximum age. At level 4 and 5 awards are given in achievement and places. Level 6 is also a compulsory level of competition. Each level builds on the skills of the previous level and likewise is judged with higher expectations. The USAG structure is based on a progressive "step by step" building of physical, emotional and psychological skills. Proficiency of all aspects of the gymnast at each level is expected and required to insure a safe, smooth movement through the levels. The minimum age for this level of competition is seven.

    Optional Levels

    Optional competition consists of each gymnast performing her own routines for each event. The Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG) produces the optional rules every four years in conjunction with the Olympics. This book dictates what each routine needs to contain (compositions), the value of what is done (difficulty), and how to evaluate how well it is done (execution). There are four optional levels and they are Levels 7, 8, 9, and 10. The first level of competition begins with Level 7 and minimum age for Level 7 is seven. The minimum age for Level 8 and 9 is eight while for Level 10 is nine. The requirements and expectations from one level to the next increases and the same is true with the compulsory levels. Level 8 is the second level of optional competition. Its difficulty requirements and expectations are harder than Level 7. The third level of optional competition begins with Level 9. Level 10 is considered a pre-elite level and for the truly dedicated and motivated gymnast.

    Elite is Level 11 of competition and like Level 10 it is for the truly dedicated athletes. The Elite Level is broken up into two categories and they are the national and international, Child National Elite (10-12 years old) and Junior National Elite (13-15 years old), and they compete skill testing and optional routines. Senior National Elite (16 + years) compete optional only; Junior International Elite (11-15 years old) compete optional only, and Senior International Elite compete at the Olympics and World Championship if they are chosen for the teams.

    Gymnastic Leotards VS. Ballet Leotards

    I know that I am not the only person that has asked this question. Why would someone make a distinction between gymnastic leotards and Ballet Leotards if there was not a difference? There has to be a difference somewhere. I needed to know the answer so I did a few searches on Google. I found that there were actually people interested in this same question. But most of the same answers came back. First people gave a definition of a leotard. So, here is definition.

    Leotard – A close fitting one piece garment worn by dancers, acrobats, and aerialists, tights.

    Then, people would proceed to explain that there are not any differences between Gymnastic and Ballet leotards. They are the same type of leotards. The only distinction made was that short sleeve leotards are mostly used during practices and long sleeve leotards are mostly used for performances.

    So, why do so many people make the distinction?

    I would guess that the distinction is made because of the two types of sports. Not that each sport would need two specifically designed leotards but that a person who was a gymnast would probably search on the internet for a gymnastics leotard. The same would hold true for a ballet dancer. They would search with the keywords of ballet leotards. I would suspect the dances would search the same way with the keyword dance leotard.

    So, I guess I would refer back to the definition again; all a leotard is a tight fitting one piece garment.

    There should not be a difference.

    So how should someone compare leotards?

    Well, what is left size, fit, style and color.

    1. What color of leotard is needed for the engagement?

    2.Does the leotard size fit the body shape?

    3.Does the elasticity of the leotard fit correctly for your body type?

    4.Is the style of the leotard right for you? Ex, a thong leotard.

    I guess these are the lasting questions that any leotard owner should ask, either they are involved in gymnastics, dancing or ballet.

      Shawn Johnson From The 2008 Summer Olympics

      Time to clear some more space in that stack of pretty Olympic Medal boxes. Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin are bringing home more Medals, including a beaming Gold of Johnson’s very own. Johnson beat her friend and teammate Nastia Liukin on the balance beam in the last of the Olympic games gymnastic events to win the Gold.

      Johnson performed a powerful routine, as always. The 7.0 start value of her routine was the highest in the competition. She finished with a huge grin, scoring 16.225 to take over the lead. Liukin went next. Though she is the reigning world champion on the beam, her start value was 6.6, the third lowest among the eight final competitors. Her routine was graceful and smooth, as opposed to Johnson’s routine which was filled with difficult tricks. She finished with a 16.025 score, not good enough to pass Johnson, her on-going rival and Olympic roommate.

      Johnson who had already won 3 Silver medals was ecstatic to finally win a Gold in her final chance of this Olympics. Nastia Liukin did win the Gold Medal in the all a round competition and Johnson took the Silver. Together the two women have won 8 medals.

      Earlier in the games Johnson was narrowly edged out on the floor exercise by Sandra Izbasa of Romania who won the Gold by a slim margin of .15 points. That was the first Gold medal to be won by a European at this Olympic Games. Shawn Johnson who went before her thought she had done enough to win the Gold, she had to watch as Izbaza nailed every part of her routine as well. Which lead to some speculation where the judges more rewarding to the contestants who performed later in the competition? Some think Johnson was robbed but either way they both performed brilliantly.

      In the end Johnson got her individual Gold that she wanted so badly, when she found out she won Gold her smile beamed as brilliant as the Gold Medal itself.

      Sports  knee injuries are the most common injury seen in Britain today.
      In running alone, 60% of all runners are injured in an average year and about one third of these sports injuries affect the knee.

      Knee injuries are also the most common sports injuries sustained by school children, as they often occur during football, hockey and rugby.

      Yet far too little is known by the general public about the advantages of knee support or the other simple steps that can be taken to help knee injury prevention.

      The knee is the largest joint in the body, made up of bones, cartilage, muscles, tendons and ligaments. A knee sports injury can involve any of these.

      It can be hard to understand knee injuries and some of the complicated terms used do not make this any easier for the layperson.

      You may have heard of knee ‘overuse’ for example. Well, although it is sometimes called an ‘overuse’ injury, the real name of the condition is iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS). This is one of the most common knee injuries. It is actually caused by a lack of strength and flexibility rather than anything than can accurately be described as overuse. In fact, it can be brought on in runners even if they are only running around 5 miles, which can hardly be seen as overuse.

      There are a number of other common knee injuries. First, there is a knee sprain which means you have stretched or torn a ligament. Then there are strains, which mean you have torn a muscle or tendon.

      Tendinitis happens when a tendon gets inflamed. Damage to the menisci is a really common sports injury, especially in activities where a side to side movement or a sudden change in speed can cause them to tear.
      And, of course, sometimes there can be cartilage injuries, where a small piece of bone or cartilage breaks off, causing long term knee pain.

      Osgood Schlatter Disease is particularly common in teenagers aged between 10-15, especially if they are having a growth spurt. A typical symptom is pain just below the front of the kneecap on the tibia, which gets worse with activity. There is sometimes a bump below the knee joint that is painful to touch. Osgood Schlatter Disease is especially common in boys who play sports involving running, kicking, or jumping, all of which put strain on the quadriceps muscles.

      The arterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is the most common knee ligament to be damaged in a sports injury, usually by a sudden twist or landing badly after a jump. Interestingly, women athletes are eight times more likely to suffer from damage to the arterior cruciate ligament than men.

      Nobody is immune from knee injuries, with many professional footballers like Ruud Van Nistelrooy and Paul Gascoigne being well known for their knee injuries.

      For many knee injuries, it is advised to rest the knee and apply compression. In these cases, a knee brace can help. In the very worst cases, surgery may be necessary.

      As knee injuries are so painful and so common, prevention is always better than cure. When playing sport, it is a good idea to wear protective equipment, such as kneepads and shin guards. Knee support including knee straps and knee braces can also help prevent injury and protect your knee if you have injured it previously.

      It is also vital to make sure you always warm up and cool down and that your training programme is increased gradually, so that you do not put your knee under undue strain.

      It is well worth trying weightlifting to strengthen your muscles and yoga or stretching to improve flexibility, as this will cut down the risk of sports injury. And, of course, if your sport involves jumping, do make sure you bend your knees when you land.

      Increasing awareness about knee injuries, knee support and sports first aid can help you stay fit, so is a vital ingredient to becoming a successful athlete.

      Italian ballerina Virginia Zucci first wore the classical tutu skirt in the 1880s. It juts outwards from the hips to showcase the legs. Today, there are two versions being used in the ballet dance – The flat Pancake / Platter / Plate or Russian design and the other being the softer Powderpuff or Balanchine style.

      Bell Tutu Skirt:
      This skirt comes with more layers and is actually a combination of the tutu skirts mentioned above. As the name suggests, the bell tutu is shaped like a bell and is made without hoops. Made of softer tulle, the ruffles are stitched onto it.

      A search can actually reveal many styles of tutus available along with different names. The basic style often overlaps although one may find many versions today.

      Ballet Shoes:
      Canvas ballet shoes are generally the most popular kinds being widely used in all the ballet classes. Ballet shoes are required to maintain a perfect balance when dancing on the toes. They are also known as pointed toe shoes. Leather ballet shoes though expensive than the former kind, are also very popular due to the longevity it offers and better grip on the floor. The perfect fit can help you master the moves on the dance floor.

      Pointe Shoes:
      When the ballet dancer rises on the tip of the toes during the performance, it is known as en pointe. Only done by females, the right pair of ballet shoes goes a long way in performing the pointe work. The shoes are flat and sturdy to enable the dancer to maintain the poise. They also help in creating the illusion of weightlessness.
